Big Step Forward for the Illinois Yoga Community!
March 8, 2016
Today, the Illinois Senate Higher Education Committee passed SB 2743 by a vote of 10-0! This legislation, supported by Yoga Alliance, clarifies that the Illinois law governing vocational schools does not apply to yoga teacher training programs (YTTs). If this law were applied to YTTs, it would result in burdensome and unnecessary regulation by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE).
We are incredibly pleased that the bill passed with unanimous support, which demonstrates to legislators how YTTs differ from vocational programs. This overwhelming vote in favor of the legislation affirms that our message is resonating.
We are thankful to Senator Don Harmon for introducing SB 2743 and shepherding the bill through committee. We are also grateful to all of the yogis who reached out to their representatives and formally expressed support for the legislation online. Yoga Alliance advocacy efforts are spurred by feedback we receive from yogis across the country; your support and advocacy on behalf of your local yoga community is greatly appreciated.
Yoga Alliance is focusing our advocacy efforts on removing the substantial burdens states are attempting to place on YTTs in the form of fees and extra paperwork – these regulations do not help the consumer but do add unnecessary paperwork and expenses for small businesses. We will continue to combat unfair regulations that may prevent studios from offering yoga teacher training programs.
What's Next?
The bill now moves to the floor of the full Illinois Senate. We will keep you posted on our continuing progress and as more developments arise we will let you know how your voice can be heard!
