You Can Create Change - Yoga in AL Public Schools

Last Updated: April 14, 2021

Dear Alabama Yoga Alliance Members,

As you likely are aware, the Alabama legislature is now considering a bill that would allow for yoga instruction to be shared with public school students—a practice that has been banned for 28 years in the state. Yoga Alliance has been closely following this bill as it passed the State House of Representatives (73–25) and will be considered on the floor of the State Senate in the coming weeks.

While the bill includes some restrictions on using chanting and words such as “namaste”—which is perceived by some members of the legislature as religious—Yoga Alliance is encouraged that this piece of legislation, should it pass, would provide increased access to yoga among school children. In fact, there are volumes of research and hundreds of stories that illustrate the numerous benefits of yoga for youth.

To encourage passage of the bill, your local Senator needs to hear from you. We’ve created an automated email that you can customize and send directly to your Senator, to voice your support for passage of the bill. You can access the email tool here.

Additionally, ask your fellow Alabamians—friends, family, and fellow yoga practitioners—to send an email to their State Senator using the link as well.

It is always our goal to support you and improve accessibility to the practice we know is beneficial to all. We will keep you posted on our efforts and thank you for all you do for your community. If you have any questions, further input, or information regarding this issue, please share it with us at yaadvocacy@yogaalliance.org.
