A Unanimous Win in the Senate Regulatory Reform Committee!
Last Updated: December 9, 2016
We are pleased to announce that Senator Tonya Schuitmaker’s bill SB 818 was passed unanimously (by an 8-0 vote) by the Michigan Senate Regulatory Reform Committee today! This legislation exempts Michigan’s yoga teacher training programs (YTTs) from burdensome and unnecessary regulation. Yoga Alliance® strongly supports this legislation and we thank Sen. Schuitmaker and the committee members who are committed to promoting our vibrant yoga community.
We began working on your behalf in Michigan after our members contacted us to express their concerns about regulation of YTTs as “proprietary” or “occupational” schools by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Since then, we have been working with Yoga Alliance members, as well as Michigan regulators and legislators, to protect the rights of Michigan YTTs to operate without unnecessary intrusion.
Over the coming weeks, we expect SB 818 to be considered by the full Senate. As our bill makes its way through the Michigan Legislature, we will keep you informed every step of the way. In the meantime, we would love to hear from you! If you would like to get involved or share you experiences, please contact us at yaadvocacy@yogaalliance.org.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue!
