Yoga Alliance Opposes Attempted YTT Regulation in Slovenia

May 28, 2015

In recent weeks, Yoga Alliance® has been contacted by yoga teachers in Slovenia who are concerned about government attempts to regulate the yoga community in their country.

On May 20, 2015, Yoga Alliance sent a letter to Slovenia’s Minister of Education, Science and Sport to voice our concerns about the ministry’s recent initiatives to regulate yoga studios and yoga teacher trainings.

Though this is Yoga Alliance’s first time advocating outside the United States for the self-regulation of yoga, our stance remains the same; we oppose unfair and unnecessarily burdensome government regulation that targets the teaching or practice of yoga.

We also disagree with the ministry’s proposition that yoga is a type of sport and should be regulated as such. Yoga was developed 5,000 years ago as a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual practice. Although the yoga community has many perspectives about the purpose of practicing yoga, physical exercise is not the primary or only goal.
